Your Won't Hurt Your Dog - Jeff Gellman Seminars (2020)

So many people are afraid to start using the remote collar for doing it wrong and/or hurting your dog. Good you should be a little concerned, that is what is going to keep you from hurting your dog. Folks are afraid of messing up their dogs with the colllar, lets face it, you are not using a collar and your dogs are pretty messed up already.

the thing is that if you look at a remote collar as a communication device, read the owners manual thoroughly, watch the free videos that are available online, understand the concept of how to train your dog, use it as a layering system over your existing program of training commands (which is reward based for us) your dog will start understanding the remote. We do something called Escape Training which teaches the dog to turn off low level remote pressure, this is done once the command is done, BUTTTTT you are using leash guidance, your body movement and even food to help the dog. The last thing we want anyone to be doing with the remote is just pushing buttons on the remote to "Make" a dog do something or correct them for something that you have not taught them, this applies to obedience commands for us. We teach the CS (constants stim) and NCS (non compliant stim) philosophy for obedience.

As far as stopping unwanted behaviors, that is a different situation all together, the remote collar is great for that, that is with you correcting the dog for doing the unwanted behavior. that historically is at a higher level and using the momentary button. You do not need to "train" the dog before you do the protocol, you don't want the dog getting into the trash can or jumping on counters (both can be deadly to the dog) you let the dog know by the human staying with neutral energy and let the remote collar do the yelling at a level that is absolutely uncomfortable for the dog to do those behaviors, you need to put an inhibitor into the dog associted with those events in order for the dog to stop. We do it and it works all the time. You can also do this first as well, you don't have to have the dog do any sort of low level obedience first, you may not have the time for that, you need to stop the uwanted behaviors first and today or your dog can injur themselves or others.

This is just 2 small examples for folks, remote collar training is still training, lots of work goes into it, there is a skill set to it, its not an "easy fix" as far as the obedience realm. For Stopping unwanted behaviors, it is a FANTASTIC and effective and life saving tool.

This clip is from my Problem Solving Seminar series: Jeff Gellman Seminars. We focus on stopping unwanted behavior as well as teaching dog owners the philosophies we have been successful with in the rehabilitation of thousands of dogs all over the world. We empower humans to be able to finally communicate with their dogs in a way they understand. www.JeffGellmanSeminars.com for upcoming dates and locations
