Hugo’s Journey - Solid K9 Training (2020)

We are half way through! For those of you who have been following Hugo’s journey, we sat down with his owner about her experience thus far. We can’t stress the importance of mid and go home trainings enough. We know the dog will be fine and the dog knows it’s stuff, and it does well with its trainers. But what about when the dog sees its owner? We sometimes find that dogs do regress a bit when their owner is brought back into the picture. Not because a lack of training, but because of association. The dog has been patterned to behave a certain way for years with this one person. In Hugo’s situation: when Dana is holding the leash, Hugo’s muscle memory is to lunge and try to attack people. That’s why our owner training sessions are SO important. We not only teach the owner a new skill set, but the dog learns to believe them about it, too. The relationship gets reset. The owner becomes relevant to the dog, and we get to troubleshoot and role play a ton of scenarios where the dog would have struggled in the past. By showing the owner that their dog actually CAN behave a certain way, it gives them confidence. By helping owners succeed you organically will help the dog succeed. We could talk forever about why training the human is such an important step. But we will probably just make a video about it 🙂
