We focus so heavily on tools when it comes to training because we care more about the owners’ success than anything. We can train dogs without any tools, but that’s a skill set that comes from working with thousands of dogs. We don’t want to rely on our relationship with the dog because it doesn’t transfer at the go home. We would end up with a dog that listens really well for us and falls apart when the owner steps into the picture. Why? Because the dogs relationship with the owner is “I don’t listen to you.” Tools give the owners the upper hand and control for the first time ever. Tools give the owner a dog that actually listens to them. THEN they can start building a new relationship based on good behavior, lots of positive interactions, and mutual respect. But relationships take time. Right off the bat, owners just need help and confidence. If it takes an e collar or a prong collar or a muzzle to get them there, then we really don’t care. We just want them to enjoy life with their dog again.
