What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #74

What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #74

Your rights to train your dog are slowly being taken away.

If you are not aware of the huge issue in dog training about folks wanting to ban your right to train your dog with not only certain tools but also certain words and phrases. It has been going on for a while, but lately it has been ramping up even more especially in the UK

It is well funded and backed by different hate groups and folks who have an extreme ideology. Unfortuntely they also lack the ability to train your average household pet and are not able to stop any unwanted behavior, especially the ones that end up with dogs being surrendered and killed in our shelter system.

I have been speaking up on this topic for the last 10 years publically since my radio show days and though many foks are becoming more and more educated about tools, philosophies and techniques, the pressure from hate groups disguised as groups who are caring about the dog is increasing. Don't let them fool you, they don't care about the dogs and they don't care about you. They care about an ideology and will punish you if you don't jump on board with them (ironic isn't it).

Personally I could care less how you train your dog as long as you train your dog, if you can train your dog to be obedient and train your dog dog to stop unwanted behaviors so you can have a family pet that you can keep in your home and keep you, your family and the community safe that is awesome. If you can't don't worry there is help, but be careful about some folks who will outright lie to you and use scare tactics, shaming and bullying to keep you from training your dog in a way that actually works.

We see this over and over again, dogs going to multiple trainers for even the most basic issues, like walking on a leash and they still can't do it after 6-12-18 classes, well if that cannot be done, how are you going to stop resource guarding, aggression, anxiety, jumping, counter surfing, running away, nuicance barking? those things take a little more to a lot more skill. Walking a dog is a pretty easy thing to accomplish for 99% of the dogs out there.

So be super careful about all of the false info, the memes, the catchy slogans, like "don't train with pain" I see a lot of dog owners in a lot of pain since they can't stop the unwanted behavior in their dogs.

I am a little baffled at the point we have reached where folks are trying to pass laws that say you cannot say NO to your dog, that is what so many countries are currently doing. Its not about shock collars, its not about prong collars. Its about you not being able to have the choice to train in a way that works for you and your dog.
